For those who are new to digital marketing, search engine optimization can sound difficult and hard to understand. The term itself is a mouthful! Some people are intimidated by the concept, but once you understand the basics, you will be able to use different tips and tricks to improve your brand’s visibility online.

Visibility is an effect of your digital marketing efforts. When you want to advertise on the internet, you want to make your brand or website visible and accessible to your customers. You can do this by either placing your ads on platforms or making your site searchable using keywords. The former is a more active, targeted approach you pay to get them to direct people to your site. On the other hand, the latter is a more organic technique, and the traffic generated for your website is free of charge.

To generate traffic to your site for free, you need to optimize your website to make it easy for search engines to find you. Search engines process results using an algorithm. How you rank on that list of search results is based on many factors. The better optimized your website is, the higher the chances of your brand getting noticed.

Search engine optimization (SEO) aims to get your site as high up in the rankings as possible since users are more likely to click on results that appear on the first page. There are many ways to employ search engine optimization (SEO), and here are several ways you can try to improve your ranking with them:

Figure out your keywords

To figure out what keywords you should own, you need to think about how people will try to find your products. If you are selling pest control services, you might want to use “pest control” and other terms related to your business like “rodents,” “termites,” “inspection,” “fogging,” and so on.

The more unique your keywords, the less competition you will have when it comes to rankings. However, you need to keep the user in mind and think about what they will use to search. If the keyword is too unique or uncommon, your efforts to rank may be futile.

Tag your content with keywords

Now that you have your keywords, you need to populate your website with them. Think of them as homing devices to attract internet users to your site. Label all your media like pages, photos, videos, and blog posts with keywords whenever appropriate. If you have blog content, make sure that your unique keywords are interspersed naturally in the text.

Update your content frequently

Engines like Google prefer recent content, so make sure to update your site with new media and articles as often as possible. If you have a digital marketing plan, make sure it includes a schedule for uploading content at least twice or three times a week. Stale pages tend to be ignored or pushed down the rankings.

Check your competitors

If you aren’t sure whether people successfully find your site through keywords or key phrases, try searching them yourself and see what comes up. If your competitors’ products outrank yours, browse their website and identify what keywords they are using. You might want to adjust your strategy based on what they are doing and improve on it.

Audit your website

If it takes any longer than a few seconds for your site to open, the search engine will downgrade your ranking. The faster your site downloads, the higher up on the hierarchy it goes. Site speed is affected by many things, but mostly it is dictated by your server’s capacity where you host your site. Consult your website design service, and make sure the server capacity isn’t being overwhelmed by the demand.

These are just some of the basic ways you can improve your visibility on search engines. As you gain more leads and engage more customers, you will gain more insight into their behavior. SEO isn’t a one-time solution. It’s an ongoing process of updating and keeping your website relevant to continue to be top of mind when your customers look for you.
